Finallybythe19thcenturythelanguagewassettled.AtthattimetwobigchangesinEnglishspellinghappened:firstSamuelJohnsonwrotehisdistionaryandlaterNoahWebsterwroteTheAnericanDictionaryoftheEnglishLangrage.ThelattergaveaseparateidentitytoAmericanEnglishspeelling.
EnglishmowisslsospokenasaforeignorsecondlanguageinSouthAsia.Forexanple,IndiahasaverylargenumberoffluentenglishspeakersbecauseBritainruledIndiafrom1765to1947.DuringthattimeEnglishbecamethelanguageforgovernmentandeducation.EnglishisalsospokeninSingaporeandMalaysiaandcountuiesinAfricasuchasSouthAfrica.TodaythenumberofpeoplelearningEnglishinChinaisincreasingrapidly.Infact,ChinamayhavethelargestnumberofEnglishlearners.WillChineseEnglishdevelopitsownidentity?Onlytimewilltell.
