2006年,北京市委、市政府下发《关于区县功能定位及评价指标的指导意见》,将东城、西城、崇文和宣武四个区定位为“首都功能核心区”.如今,新东城区面积41.84平方公里,汇聚了故宫、天坛、雍和宫、国子监、前门大街、王府井大街、长安大戏院、保利剧院等,有极其丰富的名人故居、博物馆、演艺中心等文化、娱乐资源,还有北京站、北京南站等核心交通枢纽.
故宫是世界文化遗产,5A级景区.多年来,故宫力压八达岭长城、颐和园景区、明十三陵景区,雄踞北京旅游之首,仅2008年,接待游客949万人次.天坛也是世界文化遗产,5A级景区,2007年,天坛公园接待游客486.67万人次,营业收入1．72亿元,跻身北京旅游前五强.
前门大街、王府井大街均为北京著名文化和商业步行街,是北京非物质文化遗产集聚地区.2008年8月7日,前门大街重修开放,仅一个月就接待国内外游客442万人次,最高日接待人流量达32.3万人次.
