LastSept.11wasanimportantdaytoo.AfterunknowngunmenattackedaidworkersfromtheNobelPrize-winningMedicinessansFrontiersataroadblockonthatdaymostoftheinternationalaidgroupshelpingDarfur’s6millionpeoplestoppedusingtheroads.OnDec.18unknowngunmenattackedthesoutherntownofGereidA.Morethan70aidworkersthenpulledoutoftherefugee(难民)campthere-Darfur’slargestwith130000people-leavingonly10RedCrossemployeesbehind.Yetatthetimenoonesaidwhathadreallycausedthesuddenpullbacks.
DamaginghasbecomesurprisinglycommoninDarfurwhere200000Africanshavebeenkilledandathirdofthepopulationhavebeensentfleeingintocampsinthreeyearsofwar.Buttheattacksoninternationalaidworkerssuggestedadramaticanddangerousstart-toattackonpurposethosehelpingtokeepDarfur’smillionsofrefugeealive.AdozenpeoplefromforeignNGOs(non-governmentalorganizations)havebeenkilledinjustthepastsixmonthsmorethanpreviousyears.Thereareabout14000aidworkersinDarfurnowthemajorityofthemSudaneseworkingforforeignNGOsandU.N.agenciesanddelivering$1billionayearinaid.Justafewmoreterribleattackscouldthrowthatintojeopardy.Lastweek14U.N.officesworkinginDarfurmadeaclearwarningthat“thehumanitarian(人道主义)organizationcannotpossiblymakecertainthesurvivalofthepopulationinDarfurifaidworkersdon’tfeelsafe.”
