Thenumberofaccidentsinvolvingpedestrians(行人)wearingheadphonesisontherise,areportsuggests,causingfreshwarningfromroadsafetygroupsinBritain.
AUS-basedstudyfoundatotalof116reportsofdeathorinjurytopedestrianswearingheadphonesbetween2004and2011,jumpingfrom16in2005to47in2011.
Mostvictimsweremen(68%)andundertheageof30(67%),witharoundoneintenofallcases(9%)undertheageof18.Some89%ofthecasesoccurredinurbanareasandmorethanhalf(55%)ofthevictimswerestruckbytrains.
Eighty-oneofthe116accidents(70%)resultedintheperson’sdeath---eventhoughawarningwassoundedinaroundathirdofthecases.
Thestudyconcluded,“Theuseofheadphonemaybeasafetyrisktopedestrians,especiallyinenvironmentswithmovingvehicles(cars).Furtherresearchisneededtodetermineifandhowheadphoneusethreatenspedestriansafety.”Britishroadsafetygroupswarnedpedestrianstobecareful.
FloorLieshout,directorofYouthForRoadSafety,said,“Thisstudyshowsoncemoretheimportanceofusingallofoursenseswhileweareneartraffic.Itisimportantthatwefindanattractivewaytomakeyouthlearnabouttherisksofwearingheadphonesintraffic.”
AndrewHoward,whoistheheadofroadsafetyattheAutomobileAssociation,addedthatsomepedestrianscanbe“sofocusedintheirownlittleworldtheyforgettheworldgoingonaroundthem”.Thatcanincludeheadphonewearers,Howardsaid,butalsopeopletalkingonphones.
However,Howardsaidthatmoreresearchesneededtobedone.
Earlierstudieshaveshownthatpeoplewearingheadphonesortalkingonphonescansuffer“inattentionalblindness”whichmakesthemisolated(孤立)fromtheworldaroundthem.
IanHarvey,atthecharityCivicVoice,saidthat“todefeatisolationandtohelpbuildacivic(文明的)society,peopleneedtointeract(交往)witheachother.
Hesaid,“Abasisforanycivilizedsocietyiscommunication---Surfingtheweb,listeningtoMP3s,readingblogsorsendinge-mailisnotinteractingwithaperson;it’sinteractingwithamachine.
