InArizonaman-madedamsacrosstheColoradoRiverhavemadetwolargelakesinthemiddleofthedrydesertcountry.AtLakePowelltheredstonearchofRainbowbridgeriseshighabovethebluelake.
Therearefewroads.ManyareasofLakePowell'sshorecanonlybereachedbyboatoronfoot.ButhikersinthisemptydesertlandsometimesfindveryoldnativeAmericanpicturespaintedontherocks.
InDeathValleyCaliforniathesummertemperaturerisesto130-165degreesFahrenheit.Thereislessthantwoinchesofraineachyear.DeathValleyisthelowestplaceinAmerica-925metresbelowsealevel.Inthe1800smanytravelersdiedwhentheytriedtocrossthiswaterlessvalleyintheterribleheat.
Althoughthedesertisdryandseemsemptythereisplentyoflifeifyoulookclosely.Smallinsectssnakesandratshavelearnedhowtoliveinthedesertheat.Theyliveundergroundandcomeoutatnightwhenitiscool.Plantssuchascactineedverylittlewater.Whenitdoesraininthedesert(sometimesonlyonceortwiceayear)plantsgrowquicklyandflowersopeninasingleday.Forashorttimethedesertiscoveredwithsplendidcolor.
