SohowtoefficientlyremedythisinimicalnaturalflawendowedbytheOmnipotencesincewehumansalwaystrysohardtoperfectourselves?Inmyopinion,theonlywaytoachievethisseeminglyimpossiblegoalistolearntoadmire,trytoappreciateothers’virtuesandadvantageswedonotownbutforalongtimehavecoveted,especiallythatofourpeers.Thedistinctionsbetweenenvyandadmirationareobviousenoughbutthereisonerespectstillworthyofmention,thatjealousywouldnotbearousedbetweentwopersonswhoarebynomeansrelatedinanysense.Forinstance,wemaybeenviouswhenoneofthepeershasgotanawardbutwedefinitelywon’tbejealousifMichaelJordanhasbeenconferredontheMVP.Andthedegreeofenvyoftenincreasesifthepeerwhohasoutdoneushadusedsometreacherytricksorshamefullytakensomeunfairadvantages.Andthistypeofenvyofteninevitablyresultsinoverflowingbuthiddenhatred.Thedecidedsafetyofthemiddlestationoflife,asadvocatedbyConfucianism,isoneoftheevidencesthatreflectman’sfeartowardthegrudgecausedbyjealousy.
Butenvyisnotastotallydevilishasitseemstobe.Slightjealousycanstimulateourdesiretoachievewhatwewantorwhatweenvy.AccordingtoFreudiantheories,itistheemotionofjealousywhichfinallystirsthepoorpeopleinmiserytopursuefairnessandjustice.Butcorrespondinglyitisamorbidanddestructiveemotionthatsometimesbothersandfrustratesus.
