ItisapresidentialmemorialinWashington,D.C.,dedicatedtoThomasJefferson,anAmericanFoundingFatherandthethirdpresidentoftheUnitedStates.TheneoclassicalbuildingwasdesignedbyJohnRussellPope.ItwasbuiltbyPhiladelphiacontractorJohnMc.Shain.Constructionbeganin1939,thebuildingwascompletedin1942,andthebronzestatueofJeffersonwasaddedin1947.Whencompleted,thememorialoccupiedoneofthelastsignificantsitesleftinthecity.
