西方的价值观正是由一系例有别于其它文明的文学、科学、音乐、哲学等诸多因素构成.在这些方面的杰出代表人物也容易成为当时时代所特有的偶像.因此对这些偶像的崇拜也反就当时人们对时代所特有价值观的追求.
本论文以西方偶像的演变过程为范例,对西方社会的价值观发展过程作一次总体的回顾.文中把不同的西方偶像崇拜划分为三个重要的历史时期：远古时期——原始崇拜,中世纪——教会和骑士崇拜,近代——个人的自我崇拜,并在这些历史时期的背影下对这些西方偶像在西方人心目中的地位来分析,借以观察他们是如何评价自身价值,如何处理自身与社会的关系.旨在加强人们对西方文化和历史的认识.
