AstheauthorofTheGreatGatsby,FitzgeraldisoneofthegreatestwritersintheU.S.HisgreatnessisthatheinstinctivelyoutsidepersonalexperienceintotheexperienceoftheentireUnitedStates,reflectedthetemperamentandoutlookofthetimesinadvertently;Hesucceededinhispersonaltruthandthetruthofthecommunityinameltingfurnace.Fitzgeraldfacedtheissueofthe”Americandream”shattered.InTheGreatGatsby,heusedhispersonalexperiencetogiveGatsbyaprofoundsymbolicsignificance.ThroughGatsby'sdream,struggle,frustrated,deflated,andhesharplycriticizedsuchastheU.S.post-warsocialvalues,ethics,andmoralvalues,stronglyexpressedsorrowforthetraditionalvalues,traditionalbeliefsandtheanxietyoftheDestructionofthe“AmericanDream.”(吴建国,2002)
TheGreatGatsbyisconsideredasaclassicofAmericanpost-warfictionsofthe1920s.(Spindlier,1983)Inthenovel,FitzgeraldcriticizesAmericansocietyofthe1920sanddemonstratesthedominantpowerofmoney,aswellashuman’smindlessself–indulgence.Theemploymentofsymbolismisthemoststrikingartisticfeature,whichrevealsFitzgerald’saccomplishedartistry.InthenovelFitzgeraldusesalargenumberofbeautifulanduniquesymbolandmetaphor,sothatreadersin-depthunderstandthecharactersatthesametimeenhancethethemeofthenovel'spowerandartisticexpression.Totaketheimpressionofthenoveldescribestheway,describeboththewarmandcalm.Novelsceneswiththemaincharacters,thespecificthingswithdifferentcolorshasitsownsymbolicmeaning,andthesecharactersandscenes,thingswiththecolorcombinationgettogetherforaperfectunity.
Becauseofsomelimitations,thisresearchhasonlytouchedthetipofaniceberg.Morestudiesareexpectedinthefuture.
