Abstract:Thispaper,writtentomarkASCE's150thanniversary,tracestheroleofhydraulicengineeringfromearlyormid-twentieth-centurytothebeginningofthetwenty-firstcentury.Ahalf-centuryagohydraulicengineeringwascentralinbuildingtheeconomiesoftheUnitedStatesandmanyothercountriesbydesigningsmallandlargewaterworks.Thatprocessentailedaconcentratedeffortinresearchthatrangedfromtheminutedetailsoffluidflowtoageneralstudyofeconomicsandecology.Graduallyoverthelasthalf-century,hydraulicengineeringhasevolvedfromafocusonlargeconstructionprojectstonowincludetheroleofconservationandpreservation.Althoughthehydraulicengineerhastraditionallyhadtointerfacewithotherdisciplines,thataspectoftheprofessionhastakenonanewurgencyand,fortunately,issupportedbyexcitingnewtechnologicaldevelopments.He/shemustacquirenewskills,inadditiontoretainingandimprovingthetraditionalskills,andformclosepartnershipswithsuchfieldsasecology,economics,socialscience,andhumanities.
