TheoriginalbridgewasbuiltoverOlympiaWayonthewestedgeofthelibrarygrounds．BeforethebridgewasbuiltsquirrelshadtoavoidtraffictoandfromtheParkPlazaofficebuildingwhereofficestaffputoutanuttyfeastforthesquirrels．ManytimesPetersandotherswhoworkedinandnearParkPlazawitnessedsquirrelsbeingrunover．
OnedayPetersfoundadeadsquirrelwithanutstillinitsmouthandthatday'scoffeebreakdiscussionturnedintosquirrelsafety．ThegroupofbusinessmencookedupthesquirrelbridgeideaandformedacommitteetoasktheblessingoftheCityCouncil(市政会)．TheCouncilapprovedandCouncilwomanBessLaRivierenamedthebridge“NuttyNarrows．”
AfterarchitectsdesignedthebridgeAmosPetersandBillHutchstartedConstructionTheybuiltthe60-footbridgefromaluminumandlengthsoffirehose(消防水带)．Itcost1000．
Itdidn'ttakelongbeforereportsofsquirrelsusingthebridgestarted．Squirrelswereevenseenguidingtheiryoungandteachingthemtheropes．ThestorywaspickedupbythemediaandNuttyNarrowsbecameknowinnewspapersallovertheworld．
In1983after20yearsofusePeterstookdowntheworn-outbridge．Repairsweremadeandcrosspieceswerereplaced．ThefadedsignwasrepaintedandinJuly1983hundredsofanimalloversattendedthecompletionceremonyofthenewbridge．
Petersdiedin1984andaten-footwoodensquirrelsculpturewasplacednearthebridgeinmemoryofitsbuilderandhisdevotiontotheproject．
