OnedayPetersfoundadeadsquirrelwithanutstillinitsmouthandthatday'scoffeebreakdiscussionturnedintosquirrelsafety.ThegroupofbusinessmencookedupthesquirrelbridgeideaandformedacommitteetoasktheblessingoftheCityCouncil(市政会).TheCouncilapprovedandCouncilwomanBessLaRivierenamedthebridge“NuttyNarrows.”
AfterarchitectsdesignedthebridgeAmosPetersandBillHutchstartedConstructionTheybuiltthe60-footbridgefromaluminumandlengthsoffirehose(消防水带).Itcost1000.
Itdidn'ttakelongbeforereportsofsquirrelsusingthebridgestarted.Squirrelswereevenseenguidingtheiryoungandteachingthemtheropes.ThestorywaspickedupbythemediaandNuttyNarrowsbecameknowinnewspapersallovertheworld.
In1983after20yearsofusePeterstookdowntheworn-outbridge.Repairsweremadeandcrosspieceswerereplaced.ThefadedsignwasrepaintedandinJuly1983hundredsofanimalloversattendedthecompletionceremonyofthenewbridge.
Petersdiedin1984andaten-footwoodensquirrelsculpturewasplacednearthebridgeinmemoryofitsbuilderandhisdevotiontotheproject.
