Thefemalesintheratpopulationwerethemostseriouslyaffectedbythehighpopulationdensity(密度).Forexamplemotherssometimesdesertedtheirchildrenandwithouttheirmothers'carethechildrendied.Theexperimentsshowedthatinoverpopulatedcommunitiesmotherratsdonotbehavenormally.Theirbehaviormaybeconsidereddiseasedadpathological(病理学的).
Theleadingmalesintheratpopulationweretheleastaffectedbyoverpopulation.Eachofthesestrongmalesclaimedanareaoftheenclosureashisown.Thereforetheseindividualsdidnotexperiencetheovercrowdinginthesamewayastheotherratsdid.Howeverleadingmalesdidbehavepathologicallyattimes.Theirantisocial(反社会)behaviorconsistedofattacksonweakermalefemaleandimmaturerats.Thisunusualbehaviorshowedthateventhoughtheleadingmaleshadenoughlivingspacetheytoowereaffectedbythegeneralovercrowding.
Non-leadingmalesintheexperimentalratcommunitiesalsoexhibitedunusualsocialbehavior.Somewithdrewcompletelyavoidingcontactwithotherrats.Othernon-leadingmalesweretooactivechasingotherratsandfightingeachother.
