       HurstonbeganherundergraduatestudiesatHowardUniversitybutherobviousintelligenceandtalentsoonearnedherascholarshiptoBarnardCollegeinNewYorkCity.Movingnorthinthe1920shelpedhergettoknowtheHarlemRenaissanceablackculturalmovementthatproducedexceptionalachievementsinliteratureartandmusic.CommunicatingwiththelikesofLangstonHughesW.E.B.DuBoisBillieHolidayandDukeEllingtonHurstondevelopedherskillsasawriterandpublishedlotsofshortstoriesandpoems.

       Hermostinfluentialworkgrewoutofherattempttorecordtheblackexperience.ThatnovelcalledTheirEyesWereWatchingGodwasaboutthreegenerationsofafamilylivinginEatonville.HerinterestingrepresentationofthesoutherndialectcausedherHarlemRenaissancecontemporariestolookdownupontheworkforwhattheysawasitsspreadofinaccuratepatterns.Hurstonhoweverremainedtruetoherprojectbelievingthattheaccuracyofherrepresentationwouldfinallywinoverthepoliticalpressuresherpeersforcedhertoaccept.
