Thescientistsstudiedtheeatinghabitsandhealthofmorethan110,000adultsformorethan20years.Theycompletedquestionnairesabouttheirdietseveryfouryears.Duringthe20-oddyearsofresearch,almost24,000peopledied,including5,910fromheartdiseaseand9,464fromcancer.
Scientistsanalyzeddifferentlifestylefactous,includingage,weight,physicalactivityandfamilyhistouryofheartdisease.Theyalsostudiedtheamountofdifferentfoodstheyate,sunchasgrains,fruitsandvegetables,nutsandfish.
Theresultsshowedthateatingonemealadayofcookedredmeat(aboutonehotdogortwoslicespfbacon)wasconnectedwitha20percentbiggerriskofearlydeath.
“Themessagewewanttocommunicateisitwouldbegreatifyoucouldloweryourintakeofredmeatconsumptiontohalfaservingadayprtwotothreeservingaweek,”thestudy’sleadauthor,AnPantoldtheUSAToday.Thestudysuggeststhateatingfoodssuchasfish,nutsandbeansinsteadofredmeatmaylowertheriskofearlydeath.
