“Thesebirdsneedtwothingstoknowwheretheyareandmigrateeffectively:a‘map’anda‘compass’,”saidHolland,apostdoctoralresearchassociateinWikelski’slab.“Whatwe’vefoundisthatjuvenilesusetheircompass,buttheadultsalsousetheirmap.”

Hollandsaid,“Thebirdsdonotlosethecompassastheyage,butsomehowdevelopthemap,eventuallyapplyingbothtoolstokeepontrackduringmigratoryflights.Scientistsalreadyhavedeterminedthatthecompassisbasedonthesunorthemagneticfield,butwherethemapcomesfromremainsamystery----onethattheteamwillbeexploringinthecomingyears.”
