Theanswerstothesequestionsshowedthatseventy-eightpercentofthefreshmenwereeighteenyearsold,andfourteenpercentwerenineteen.Itisquiteunusualforafreshmentobeyoungerthaneighteenorolderthannineteen.

Morethanhalfofthefreshmenwerestudyingincollegesfarfromtheirparents'homes;onlyfortypercentwerewithinadistanceoffiftymilesfromhome.

Thereportshowedthatmostcollegestudentshadgrownupinornearcities.Aboutone-fifthofthefreshmenreportedthattheyhadbeenbroughtupinsmalltowns;onlysevenpercentcamefromfarmfamilies.

Rathersurprisingly,thereportshowedthatonlyeightpercentofthefreshmenhadparentswhoweredivorced(离婚)orseparated.Inmostcases,bothparentswerestillaliveandstillmarriedtoeachother.

Politically,morethanathirdofthestudentsdescribedtheirviewsas“liberal”(自由的).Onlysixteenpercentconsideredthemselves“conservative”(保守的).Thelargegroup,however,weretheforty-sixpercentwhodescribedtheirpoliticsas“middleoftheroad”.Veryfewcalledtheirpoliticalviews“farleft”or“farright”.
