RobertisjustoneyoungoverseasChinesewhohascometovisithisancestors’homeland,aspartoftheInSearchofRootssummercampprogram.TheprogramisorganizedbythelocalgovernmentofGuangdongProvince.Thisprogramstartedin1980,andsofarhasbroughtthousandsofoverseasChinesestudentstoChinatolookfortheirfamilies’roots.Theyoungpeopleareusuallybetween16and25yearsold.(1)Most,likeRobert,canhardlyspeakanyChineseandhaveneverbeento Chinabefore.
ThestudentsmainlyvisitpartsofGuangdongProvinceinsouthernChina.Duringthetwo-weekcamp,theystudyChineseculture,seechangesthathavehappenedinthatarea,andvisitinterestingsights.(2)Goingtotheirancestors’villageisoftenthemostexcitingpartofthetrip. Thestudentsfeelthattheyarepartofthevillage,andexperiencevillagelife.Theydrinkfromthevillagewell,goforwalksthroughthecountryside,andwatchthevillagersdotheirdailyactivities.

TheprogramleadersbelievestronglyintheprogramandsaythatthepurposeofitistogiveyoungoverseasChinesethechancetolearnmoreaboutthemselves.“I’vereallyenjoyedthetripsofar,”saysRobert.“Thishasbeenabigstepforme,andI’mlookingforwardtofindingoutmoreaboutmyrootsduringmytimehere. ”
